Civil Engineers
Considered one of the oldest engineering streams, civil engineering is a wide-ranging specialty which incorporates many different and important aspects of engineering.
From structures – planning and design of buildings and bridges – and water – control and development of water supplies – to soil and rock mechanics. Civil engineers in general, plan, design, construct, operate and maintain roads, bridges, water supply schemes, dams, sewerage systems, transportation, harbors, canals, dockyards, airports, railways, factories and large buildings.
Consulting and contracting engineers usually travel interstate and some travel overseas. It may be necessary for some civil engineers to change residence in every few years as their works take them from one major engineering site to another. Civil Engineers should be creative, curious, analytical, and detail-oriented, and should be able to work as part of a team.
